We head to Simon's Town to visit the African Penguin Colony at Boulder's Beach. See them in their largest colony on the planet, which is managed as a scientific site to facilitate their annual breeding season and protect them from extinction.

• Route Two •

On Route Two, experience one of Cape Town's historic gardens. The Arderne Gardens in Newlands houses Africa's biggest collection of Gondwana trees - descendants in the oldest unbroken genetic lineage of trees on the planet, which goes back over 200 million years. Or, if you prefer, go on a guided hike through Newlands Forest and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which are rich repositories of fynbos, with incredible views.

Hugging the western coastline, this route passes through Hout Bay and travels along the legendary Chapman's Peak, renowned as one of the world's most beautiful drives. We head to Kasteelspoort, where we hike up the side of Table Mountain to reach the Diving Board, a protruding rock that's a popular spot for photos. It's a perfect afternoon.
